Salary Packaging at More Than One Employer

By Ben Markovic

Working at more than one FBT exempt not-for-profit organisation? Want to know how salary packaging works in your situation? Read on for some common questions and our answers!

I’m starting a new job but have already salary packaged at my old job. What can I do?

As long as the new employer is entirely separate (and you haven’t just moved to a new job under the same organisation), you can start salary packaging again. The annual salary packaging limits are per employer…this means that even if you’ve used up your full caps in your previous job, you can still take the maximum advantage at your new place of work.

What about my expenses?

You need to make sure you’ve got enough expenses to cover salary packaging at your old job and new job. For example, if you’ve already used your credit card statements for expense reimbursement claims at your previous employer, you shouldn’t use the same statements at your new job. You need to keep the expense claims totally separate, so as not to double up on the same ones.

I work for multiple employers at the same time. Can I salary package at each one?

Yes! Again, as long as they’re entirely separate employers, you can participate in each organisation’s salary packaging program. Just keep an eye on which expenses you’re claiming at each (see above).

My other job uses GO Salary for salary packaging. How can I set up a second salary package?

This is easy! Simply log in to the GO Salary portal and look at the menu on the left-hand side. You will see the ‘Add 2nd Employer’ option. Hit this and you’ll be able to select your new employer and create your salary package. It’s very quick!

What about my reportable fringe benefits?

If you salary package at multiple employers within the one FBT year (1 April – 31 March), then you will likely have reportable fringe benefits reported under each. You should keep this in mind, especially if you have a HELP/HECS debt, child support, or are potentially going to go over the Medicare levy surcharge. As always, seek your own financial advice.
