Client Showcase – Big Brothers Big Sisters Australia

By Ben Markovic

Our December Client Showcase features Big Brothers Big Sisters Australia! The organisation supports at-risk children and young people through evidence-based, long-term, one-to-one mentoring.

By matching a young person (aged 7 – 17) in need of support with a volunteer mentor, Big Brothers Big Sisters Australia provides a safe environment to help build their confidence, increase their resilience and open their minds to new possibilities. Big Brothers Big Sisters Australia is part of the world’s largest volunteer supported mentoring network, and has been providing best-practice one-on-one mentoring in Australia for over 40 years.

The early-intervention and preventative approach of targeting young people who are at risk of disengaging from the community not only has a profound, life-long impact on the individual, but it also contributes to improved outcomes for the wider community.

The global pandemic is expected to impact the lives of young people for years to come. Big Brothers Big Sisters Australia was able to adapt quickly in response to COVID-19 through its online mentoring program, OurSpace. Developed in partnership with Disney over 5 years ago, OurSpace was originally created as a result of the increasing demand for long term mentoring for geographically isolated young people or those in isolation due to health issues. The platform is unique in that it provides a safe, secure, video space that is observable by the mentoring coordinator.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Australia understands that every young person has a unique set of social and emotional needs. For many young people, these needs are often left unaddressed, hindering their ability to realise their full potential. Big Brothers Big Sisters wants to change this and you can support them by giving the gift of mentoring this Christmas. Please follow this link to donate.

Big Brothers Big Sisters currently have 500 young people on their list waiting to be mentored.  Adding to this are over 800 volunteers wanting to be a mentor.  Donations to the Christmas appeal will fund the resources required to making these life changing connections.
