Meal Entertainment: COVID-19 Update

Meal Entertainment: COVID-19 Update

By Ben Markovic

During this unprecedented time, the ATO has provided an update relating to meal entertainment expenses.

If you are salary packaging meal entertainment, you are able to now include take-away and delivered meals from venues which previously offered dine-in facilities, but are unable to do so due to a state public health order. Please note the below key points:

  • Payments via food delivery services (such as Menulog and UberEats) are acceptable; and
  • The purchase must still qualify as a meal, as it normally would. For example, a takeaway coffee would not qualify as a meal.

This applies to those accessing meal entertainment by receipts or the Beyond Bank card, and will be in place for the remainder of the salary packaging year, which ends on 31 March 2022. The full ATO update can be read by clicking here.
